Detroit's Phantom does not measure up.
If you have never seen it before in Toronto or the Venetian in Vegas, etc., the Detroit Opera House is where you saw it, not a theatre designed to show it. The chandelier "crashes" into the audience at the speed of an old man stepping into a warm bath. Tough to see are the portions at the top (vertical top) of the stage from the back. The 3rd string Phantom Vaerla (2nd understudy) whose vocals were almost abrasive, we saw during the first Saturday night show. Moldavan's "Christine" was average with small exceptions where she wowed us. Almost painful was her duet with Bishop's "Meg" as the 2 voices did not blend at all. The star of the show, in my opinion, was Whitney's Piangi who played his part perfectly, especially during the Don Juan scenes (reminding me of Nicholson's Joker). Off was the orchastra, even sounded, as a horn sounded out of pitch and the xylophone was being played as if it was by a high school band member. You will enjoy it if you have never seen it. You will leave dissapointed from comparison if you have. Save your money for another more worthy event.
